Is the car covered for damage?

The insurance may be in place for vehicle repairs. The right kind of insurance is the requirement. If the right type of insurance is in place, then the Insurance company will pay the claim. Either the insurance coverage is collision coverage or comprehensive coverage. Or, may be covered or partially covered under the mandatory insurance.

Collision Coverage

collision

Collision coverage is the type of insurance that covers your vehicle in the case of a crash. If this occurs then how much of the cost of the repairs are will depend on a few factors.

a) It will depend on how much damage the car received. If the insurance company feels the car is not worth repairing, it will not pay for this. Instead, the vehicle is a write-off. It means the insured will get a cheque for the value of the car.

b) A person may want to get the car fixed by a mechanic that you prefer. If this person is not approved by the Insurance Company, a claim may not be valid. The Insurance company may pay a portion of the costs. The vehicle owner will have to pay the rest.

Comprehensive Coverage

Not all damage done to a vehicle is as a result of an accident. It can be a result of an act of nature. It can occur from the theft of the vehicle. Or it can be as a result of vandalism. Any of these circumstances may be claimable under comprehensive coverage.

Can I Claim Insurance for Repairs?

There is no direct answer of yes in regards to can I claim insurance for repairs. The answer is it all depends. To begin with, every car that operates on public roads in Canada has to have basic insurance. So, will the basic insurance allow for a claim for repairs?

The type of claim that you can make with mandatory insurance also depends on who is at fault for the accident. This type of coverage provides you with DC-PD. It is direct compensation-Property Damage. How much of a claim can be made will depend on how much of the accident was your fault. For the percentage that the driver was not at fault, this is what the driver can claim. For example, if the driver were 25% at fault then the driver would be 75% no fault. The claim could be 75% of the cost of the repairs. There could be exceptions to this.

If the other vehicle was an out of province vehicle, it might change the claim. The DC-PD insurance is not in effect. It is not true if the driver of the vehicle has made an agreement to drive in Ontario. It is an agreement accepting settlements of claims under the DC-PD insurance. If this is not the case, then the driver will have to go after the other driver for costs.

In another scenario, if the driver of the other vehicle may not have insurance. Even though this is mandatory. The driver may still be able to make a claim. It would be under the Uninsured Motorist Coverage. The mandatory coverage includes this. However, there is a limit of $25,000. It is the maximum claim allowed. It includes both damage and contents. Plus there is a deductible of $300.

Increasing Your Coverage

The mandatory insurance may allow you to make a claim. There is additional protection that is available. It is by increasing the amount of insurance coverage. If you want coverage that will cover your repairs no matter who is at fault you need collision coverage. It is only for repairs needed as a result of an accident.

A driver can get coverage for other repairs needed other than from an accident. For this the driver needs comprehensive coverage. Also, there is  the option of combining both of these through all perils coverage. Then no matter what the cause of the damage is, coverage is in accordance with the policy. The policy outlines the coverage. Every Insurance company is different. They each have their own specifics of what they cover in each of their policies.

Type of Damage Repairs

When a vehicle needs repairing the type of damage depends on the cause. In the case of accidents, any of the components of the vehicle may need repairing. This includes both the interior and exterior. A valid insurance claim will cover any of this type of damage. How much coverage depends on the insurance coverage.

In the event of theft or vandalism, other types of damage can occur. The fuel components may need repair as a result of the theft of the vehicle. Or the engine may need repairs caused by misuse during the theft. A claims adjustor will determine if the damage to the vehicle is insurable.

The Vehicle Repairs

The insurance company only has the responsibility of seeing that the car is back to its pre-state condition after repairs. The repairs cannot purposely better the vehicle in any way. For example, if damage occurs to a side door, and it needs repainting. If the repair allows for just painting the door in an acceptable manner, a full vehicle paint job is not necessary. It may appear as though it is bettering the vehicle, and this is not allowed.

Insurance companies have claims adjustors who follow a claim very closely. They will determine what claims for damage can be made, and to what extent. Everyone should take the time to fully understand their insurance coverage.
